今日のポイント

話す前から決まっている意図を表す場合は、〈be動詞＋going to ＋動詞の原形〉「～するつもりです／予定です」を用いて表現します。

Unit 18で学習したwillでも「予定」を表すことができるので、場合によっては、will、be going toのいずれも使うことができますが、be going to の方が、「現在、その心構えができている」、あるいは「すでに準備などに取りかかっている」という意味合いが強くなります。

ケンがまたあのお店にやってきました。
なにやらケンが焦っているので、お店の人がその理由を聞いてみました。
「今夜クライアントと会うことになっています。」ということですが、実はケンはネクタイを一本も持っていないんです。
お店の人が自信たっぷりで見せてくれたネクタイには、どれもアニメのキャラクターの柄ばかり。さあ、どうする、ケン？

Ken: You guys have neckties too?	ケン：ネクタイも扱っているんですか？
Store clerk: You bet.	店員：その通り。
Store clerk: Let me show you some of our finest ties.	店員：素晴らしいネクタイをお見せします。
Store clerk: How do you like these?	店員：こちらはいかがですか？
Ken: Umm...	ケン：う～ん…。
Ken: Why do they all have cartoon characters on them?	ケン：どうして、全部アニメのキャラクターが付いているんですか？
Store clerk: I’m sorry... We only have novelty ties.	店員：すみません…。当店では珍しいネクタイのみ扱っているんです。
Ken: I’m going to need something more professional.	ケン：僕はもっときちんとした仕事用のものが必要なんですが。
Store clerk: Hmm... You’ll have to go to a different store for that.	店員：う～ん、それなら、別のお店に行っていただかないと。
Ken: Okay. Thanks anyway.	ケン：わかりました。お手数をおかけしました。

過去進行形は、「～するつもり／予定だったが、実際にはしなかった」「実際にしたかどうかの確認が取れていない」という意味を表します。従って、I was going to visit my clients there.「クライアントを訪問するつもりでした」は、実際には訪問していないことがわかります。
productiveは「生産的な」「実りある、hang out with～は「～と気ままに過ごす」、qualifiedは「資格要件を満たした」「適任の」。
