今日のポイント

「～しなさい／してください」と相手に命令する命令文です。動詞の原形で文を始め、主語や助動詞は用いません。丁寧な命令文にするには、pleaseを文頭、あるいは文の最後に置きます。文頭に置く場合は、Please tell me about him.、文の最後に置く場合は、pleaseの前にコンマを付けてTell me about him, please.のようになります。

映画が大好きなはずのジウ。でも、どうやら彼女はスティーブン・スピルバーグ監督を知らないようです。
「彼のことを教えてよ！」ジウがケンにお願いしています。
この言い方は英語では命令文になるんですね。

Ken : You don’t know who he is?	ケン : 知らないの？
Jiu : No. Tell me about him.	ジウ : ええ。その人のこと教えて。
Ken : He’s a very famous director.	ケン : 有名な映画監督だよ。
Ken : Watch E.T. when you get a chance.	ケン : 機会があったら「E.T.」を観て。
Jiu : Hmm... Never heard of it.	ジウ : ふーん、聞いたことないな。

命令文の否定形は、文頭にDon’tを置きます。意味は「～するな／しないで」になります。
believe in ～は「～（の存在）を信じる」「～（の能力など）を信じる」という意味。例えば、Do you believe in God?は「あなたは神さまの存在を信じる？」で、Believe in yourself.は、「自分の力を信じろ」という意味になります。
get hammeredは「ひどく酔っぱらう」という意味の、かなりカジュアルな表現です。
