今日のポイント

Unit 11の『完了・結果』、Unit12の『経験』を表す現在完了形と同様、〈have/has+過去分詞〉の形で、「どのくらい～をし続けている／ずっと～の状態である」という『継続』を表すことができます。
多くの場合、since ～「～以来」、for ～「～の間」などのような、具体的な期間を示す語とともに用います。

「セブに暮らして6か月になる」ケンですが、マクタン島へは一度も来たことがありませんでした。
マイクとソヨンはどこかにいってしまい、二人きりになったケンとジウ。
二人だけの時間を楽しみたいジウですが、ケンはサメが気になって仕方ない状態が「継続」しているみたいです。

Jiu : This is the most beautiful place you’ve taken me to, Ken!	ジウ : これまで連れてきてもらった中で一番美しい場所だわ、ケン。
Ken : I’m glad you like it.	ケン : 気に入ってもらえてうれしいよ。
Ken : Hey... Where’s Mike and So Yong?	ケン : あれ、マイクとソヨンはどこ？
Jiu : I don’t know.	ジウ : さあね。
Jiu : Let’s just enjoy our time together.	ジウ : 二人きりの時間を楽しみましょうよ。
Jiu : Do you want to go for a swim?	ジウ : 泳ぎにいかない？

Ken: It’s been just over a year now.
Jose: Wow. Time flies, huh?
Ken: It sure does.
Jose: Since when have you (a. felt comfortable using English at work b. stopped relying on Google Translate c. felt confident in communicating in English)?
Ken: I’m still working on that, actually...

「主語はどのくらいの期間～しているのか？」と尋ねるには、〈How long + have/has +主語+過去分詞〉を用います。
「主語はいつ以来～しているのか？」と尋ねるには、〈Since when + have/has +主語+過去分詞〉を用います。
Time flies.は「時間は早く過ぎる」「時が経つのは早い」という意味なので、よく日本語のことわざ「光陰矢の如し」の英訳として紹介されます。中には日本語の通りに、Time flies like an arrow.と訳すこともありますが、英語もTime flies.ということわざのように決まった表現なのでlike an arrow「矢のように」を勝手につけないようにしましょう。
