今日のポイント

Unit 23で学んだように、〈前置詞＋名詞／名詞相当語句〉を『前置詞句』と呼びます。前置詞句は、時・場所・方向・原因など、さまざまな意味を表します。
キーフレーズのat 11 o’clockは、『時』を表していますね。

今日は休日。ちょっとおシャレをしたいケンは、洋服屋さんに行きました。
ジャケットに靴に、色々と試着していたら、閉店の時間になってしまい何も買えませんでした。
店員さんが、「火曜日は11時に開店です」言っています。
火曜日にまた来ましょう。

Ken : This shirt looks nice, too...	ケン : このシャツもいいな。
Staff : Sir, we’re closing in five minutes.	店員 : お客さま、閉店5分前です。
Ken : Really? What time will you open tomorrow?	ケン : ほんとに？明日は何時に開店？
Staff : We’re closed tomorrow.	店員 : 明日はお休みです。
Staff : We will open at 11 o’clock on Tuesday.	店員 : 火曜日なら11時に開店です。
Ken : Okay. I’ll come back on Tuesday.	ケン : わかった。火曜日また来るよ。

Jose: Can you make it out, Ken?
Ken: I (a. have to stay in the office until 8 p.m. b. can get there by 7 p.m. c. will try to get there between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m.)

Jose: We will all be there (a. at 7 p.m. b. around 8 p.m. c. after 6 p.m.)

untilとbyはいずれも「～まで」という意味の前置詞ですが、意味が異なるので注意が必要です。untilは「動作や状態が継続している時間の終点」を、byは「終了時刻や期限」を表します。
従って、I have to stay in the office until 8:00 pm.「午後8時までオフィスにいなくてはいけません」は、8時よりも前にオフィスを出ることはないのがわかります。一方、I can get there by 7: pm.「午後7時までに到着できます」は、6時に到着するかもしれないし、6時半かもしれません。いずれにしろ、7時には到着しているということになります。
