今日のポイント

目的語の働きをする目的格の関係代名詞は、who(m)、which、thatの3つです。whoは主格で、目的格はwhomなのですが、会話ではほとんどの場合whoで代用します。キーフレーズ、Is she the person who you were telling me about yesterday?もwhomではなくwhoを使っていますね。なお、目的格の関係代名詞は省略することができます。

「ジウが昨日話していた人」の名前はジョー。
ケンとジョーは挨拶を交わすと早速マンガの話に。
二人とも同じマンガが大好きなようです。
どうやら、二人は気が合いそうです。

Jiu : Yes. Oh, there she is!	ジウ : ええ。あ、いたわ！
Jiu : Hi Jyo.	ジウ : こんにちは、ジョー。
Jyo : Hi Jiu! I’m glad you made it to the barbecue!	ジョー : こんにちは、ジウ。都合つけてくれてうれしいわ。
Jiu : This is my boyfriend Ken.	ジウ : ボーイフレンドのケンよ。
Ken : Hello Jyo. So, Jiu tells me you’re into manga.	ケン : 初めまして、ジョー。ジウからきみがマンガ好きだって聞いてるよ。

Ken: It was good.

go wellは「うまくいく」という意味。他にもThings went well.「うまく事が運んだ」、Everything is going well for us「すべてが私たちにとって順調に進んでいます」のように使います。
また、go well with～「～に合う」もよく使う表現です。例えば、Cheese goes well with red wine.「チーズは赤ワインに合う」、This tie goes well with the shirt.「このネクタイはシャツによく合っている」のようになります。
get a round of applauseは「ひとしきりの喝さいを受ける」、long overdueは「のびのびになっている」「とっくに期限を過ぎている」。
