今日のポイント

一般的な謝罪の表現のひとつがI’m sorry.です。キーフレーズのように、〈I’m sorry+節(主語+述語)〉の形の他、〈I’m sorry for/about～(名詞・名詞相当語句)〉の形、I’m sorry.の形があります。「今日のストーリー」にもあるように、カジュアルな会話では、Sorry, it was just a joke.とI’mをよく省略します。
なお、よりフォーマルに表現したいときには、一般動詞apologize「謝罪する」を用い、I apologizeとするといいでしょう。

ケンとジウは、マンガ・フェスティバルに行くため、ジョーと待ち合わせ。
「待たせてごめんね」ケンは、待ち合わせ場所に先に来ていたジョーに謝りました。
ジウからは、「謝るのが好きよね！」と言われています。
「謝る」ことを大切にするのも、日本の文化だよね、ケン。

Jiu : Ken is really excited about the manga festival.	ジウ : ケンったらマンガ・フェスティバルのことでものすごく興奮しちゃって。
Jiu : He even suggested we go in cosplay outfits!	ジウ : 一緒にコスプレして行こうなんて言うのよ！
Jiu : I had to persuade him to change his mind.	ジウ : あきらめるよう説得するのに苦労したわ。
Jyo : Wow, you really are an enthusiast.	ジョー : うわあ、ほんとにオタクなのね。
Jyo : Too bad, I wanted to see that!	ジョー : 残念だわ、コスプレ見たかった。
Ken : Sorry, it was just a joke.	ケン : ごめん、冗談だったんだ。
Jyo : No need to apologize.	ジョー : 謝らなくてもいいのよ。

Jiu : You like to apologize a lot!	ジウ : 謝るのが好きよね！

short noticeは「間際の通知」という意味。他にも、Thank you for coming to the meeting on such short notice.「こんなに間際のお知らせにもかかわらず、打ち合わせに来てくれてどうもありがとうございます」のように使います。
sudden requestは「急な依頼」、pile … on～は「～に…を山と積む」、flexibleは「（予定などが）融通の利く」。
