“Would you mind ~ing” 「~することは構いませんか?→~してもらえませんか?」という『依頼』の表現を学習しましょう。
英語は直接的で明確な表現が多い言語ですが、“Would you mind ~ing?”は、控えめで遠回しな日本語表現と通じるものがあります。ただし、これに対する応答の”Yes“と”No“は、日本語の「はい」と「いいえ」と反対になるので、注意しましょう。

ワンポイント・アドバイス
“mind”は、「思考」や「意識」という意味の名詞の他、「嫌がる」や「気にする」という意味の動詞としても使います。つまり、“Would you mind keeping track of the time?”の直訳は、「時間管理をすることを、気にしますか?」ですが、「時間管理をしてもらえませんか?」と訳します。
承諾する場合、“No.”「いいえ、気にしません→いいですよ」、“Not at all.”「全然構いません」か、“OK.”「大丈夫です」などのように答えます。日本語に引きずられて、“Yes.”と言うと、「はい、気にします→お断りします/嫌です」と、拒絶したことになってしまうので注意しましょう。
なお、断る場合は、“I’m sorry, but I can’t, because~.”「申し訳ないですが、できません。なぜなら~」などの表現を使い、きちんとその理由も伝えましょう。
