接待ランチ／ディナーでは、”small talk”「雑談、世間話」はとても大切です。特に、「趣味の話」は、よく使われるトピックです。
adviser 「趣味」を英語で言うと、“hobby”を思い浮かべる方が多いと思いますが、日本語の「趣味」と英語の“hobby”は、ニュアンスが異なります。“hobby“は、基本的に「ある程度の知識や技術が必要となる、中・長期的に続く創造的な活動」を指します。例えば、切手収集、スポーツ、写真、絵画、語学学習などです。散歩やドライブ、テレビの視聴などは、”hobby“ではなく、“pastime“「気晴らし」の範疇に入ります。
adviser 「暇なときはどうしているのか」という意味で「趣味は何ですか？」と尋ねたい場合は、“What do you like to do in your free time?” 「時間があるとき、何をするのが好きですか？」と聞きましょう。

Ken : What do you like to do in your free time, Steve? ケン : スティーブ、時間があるときは何をしていますか？
Steve : I like to play golf. スティーブ : ゴルフをするのが好きです。
Ken : How about you, Laura? ケン : ローラはどうですか？
Laura : I like to go scuba diving. ローラ : スキューバダイビングが好きです。
Rob : Cebu is a great place for marine sports.
We should go together sometime. What do you think, Ken? 		ロブ : セブと言えばマリンスポーツですね。
いつか是非一緒に行きましょう。どう思う、ケン？
Ken : Actually, I can’t swim. ケン : 実は、僕泳げないんだ。

ワンポイント・アドバイス
adviser “What do you like to do in your free time?”と聞かれた場合、“I like to play golf.”、“I like to go scuba diving.”の他、以下のように答えることができます。
“I usually go shopping.” 「私はたいてい買いものにでかけます。」
“I usually read books at the library.” 「私はたいてい図書館で本を読んでいます。」
adviser また、特定の活動・事柄などについて尋ねたいときは、“Do you play any sports?”「何かスポーツはしますか？」と聞くことができます。それに対しては、“Tennis is my favorite sport.”　「テニスは私の好きなスポーツです。 」などと答えます。ちなみに、質問では、”any sports”と複数形でしたが、この回答の場合は、テニスだけなので、”sport“と単数形になることに注意してください。
