今日は、「～しなければならない」という意味の助動詞“must”を使った表現を学習します。
adviser Unit 29で、“have to”は客観的に見て「～する必要がある」ときに使うと述べましたが、“must”は、主に話し手が主観的に「～しなくてはならない」と自覚しているときに使います。

We have an appointment after this. 		スティーブ : そろそろ、失礼しないといけません。
この後、予定があるのです。
Ken : We’re very glad we had a chance to talk. ケン : お話ができる機会があってとても嬉しかったです。
Laura : Thank you so much for inviting us. ローラ : お誘いいただき、ありがとうございます。
Rob : That went really well. ロブ : すごくうまくいったね。
Ken : I think so, too. ケン : 僕もそう思うよ。
Rob : Next time, let’s take them out to go scuba diving. ロブ : 今度はスキューバダイビングに誘おう。
Ken : Like I said, I can’t swim. ケン : さっきも言ったけど、僕は泳げないって。

『何かを強く勧める』ときにも”must”を使います。親しみを込めて伝える場合はキツイ響きにはなりません。
例えば、“Cebu is a wonderful place. You must come!”「セブは素晴らしいところです。絶対に来てください！」のように使います。

以下の”must”は、ストレートに話し手からの命令の響きのある強い表現です。

“What’s wrong? You must tell me.” 「どうしたの？私に話さないとダメよ」
adviser 『一般的な必要性』を表す場合も“must”を用います。
“Fully-qualified applicants must have a master’s degree.” 「十分な資格を満たしている応募者は、修士号を持っている必要があります」
adviser その他『推定』「～に違いない」「～のはずだ」の意味で使われることもあります。
“You must be mistaken. I’m not Tom.” 「人違いのはずです。私はトムではありません」
